E-tailers 'behind parcel surges'

The number of parcels handled by delivery services over Christmas last year grew by around 15%, according to new research. The study, carried out by Global Freight Solutions (GFS), showed that goods from online retailers (e-tailers) now make up 37% of all festive parcels processed by UK carriers. This figure is set to rise to 50% by 2016, it is believed. The surge in demand for parcel handling services has been welcomed by goods carriers, but it also heralds a significant shift in the industry towards consumers and away from businesses. Commenting on the new findings, GFS director Simon Veale said: "A decade ago, consumers were responsible for approximately 10% of the Christmas parcel peak. The increase that we've witnessed since has predominantly been caused by internet shopping and much of that has come after 2006, when eCommerce began to really gain popularity. "It shows no sign of slowing down. Instead we believe that the more frequent use of smartphones and tablets to buy Christmas presents online will fuel further parcel growth."
